CREATING A LASTING BOND WITH YOUR GRANDCHILD (A marathon, not a sprint)

Communication is one thing, but Bonding is a next-level activity. We sometimes think that being a Grandparent is like falling off a log. While there is some natural flow to familial connection, if we hope to grow with our Grandkids, we have to be proactive, focused, and intentional about how we can make our connections with them lasting and meaningful for us and them.

The all-important foundation is being as present as possible in the beginning years. The more support we can offer the parents, the better this will go. As we go through these “Mutual Admiration Years,” we see that an extraordinary Human Being emerges, and it is time for us to step up our game and grow with our Grandchildren. This period of our relationships with them is a bit like trying to catch a ping pong ball in a hurricane. Especially today, it is a challenge for us to keep up with this generation gap. As our little ones become more prominent, there is a sharp learning curve for most Grandparents. Their families, friends, and lives in general are usually vastly different than has been our experience. So the question becomes how can we best serve our Grandchildren?

I have been writing in the grandparents’ space for over 10 years, and I have observed that the Love Grandparents have for their Grandkids hasn’t changed one Iota. So I guess the question for the Caring Grandparent is, “What can we do about it?”. My experience has been that the most successful path to the most meaningful connection between grandparents and grandchildren is to meet them where they are.

To do this, as the saying goes, It takes a village. It takes knowledge, a willingness to adapt to what is happening in their worlds, and the help of good communication with their parents. I get my best guidance on how to be an effective Grandparent from the parents of my Grandkids.

The good news is that there are some beautiful resources thanks to organizations like AARP and, recently, a bright young man named Aaron Larsen. Aaron has created a great place to learn called GrandparentsAcademy.com. He has organized, in a very effective manner, the leading folks in the Grandparents’ space and presents their knowledge in a way that spans the many diverse circumstances that we Grandparents find ourselves in.
