GRANDPA AS DELIVERY GUY

Several years ago, I was asked to participate in a surprise Christmas scheme for my Grandkids. When my son called and asked for my help, I answered, “The answer is Yes; what is the question.”

The story begins a couple of months earlier. Their family had adopted; no, it was more like a stray dog hanging around the house they had just bought. The new dog was named Lucia. The grandchildren may have spoiled and fed her just a bit. At any rate, she became part of the family. Their house is at the top of a rise on 38 acres, so the driveway is up this hill about a half mile long. This family’s newest member would roam the land and hang out with the neighbor’s dog at the bottom of the drive. The dogs felt they owned the curve in the road where they would play and lay on the warm pavement. Long story short, a concerned sheriff’s deputy came knocking on the door to say that the dogs on the road were either going to cause an accident or be killed by the traffic navigating the curve and the hill. The challenges are many. You can’t see the road from the house. These dogs had been there for a while and were used to doing what dogs do and being a bonafide danger to themselves and passers-by.

My wonderful granddaughter found Lucia a home with an excellent young family on a rural farm some 50 miles away that was willing to take him in. That following Christmas season is when I got the call. Mom had found a litter of West Highland Terrier pups near where I live on the coast, some 6 hours away from them. It was three days til Christmas, so the plan was that my daughter and I would pick up the pup on Christmas Eve and meet the parents at the Cracker Barrel in Elon, NC, some 3 hours away. Arrangements were made, and on the appointed day, we drove down the road about 20 miles to pick up this Christmas surprise. As it turns out, the lady breeds these dogs uses her husband’s Used Car dealership (remember this detail) as an office. We go in and do the paperwork, and here lies this curled-up, shivering, gray-haired little pup who had just had his shots earlier that day. Our first impression was less than WOW!

We put him on a towel on the floorboard of the passenger’s side of the car at my daughter’s feet—he just laid there during the three-hour drive to meet them. I was slightly more concerned since he was lethargic and unresponsive the entire trip. When we got to the restaurant parking lot Renee, a nurse, said this was normal since he had just gotten his shots. I was relieved.

Christmas was a roaring success; some three years later, “BUDDY” is now in charge of the 38 acres. This 7 ½ ball of energy goes about the property barking at anything that moves, regardless of size. He thinks he is Super Dog.

When I visit, he is just a ball of energy and has added so much Joy to their household. Each time I go, I remind him that if he misbehaves, I will take him back to the Used Car Dealership.

As you can tell, we cherish and take good care of him. One way we accomplish this is to ensure his health is optimal at all times.
