Grandparents rights-They seem to be needed more each day.

The thing that bothers me most about the increasing need for Grandparents rights is that it is the children who suffer.  Our grandkids deserve all the love and support we can give them.  It is when this support  is interrupted by two adults that are attempting to resolve and/or dissolve their own relationship with each other but using the children as weapons.  As a caring grandparent this makes me angry. I realize that marriages are disintegrating at an ever increasing […]

Grandparents Rights: Are they slipping away?

Grandparents Rights are not something that are given to us.  It is incumbent upon us to be proactive.  I don’t mean that we take something from someone as much as we give something to the most important people in our lives.  In today’s legal climate the best way to insure your Grandparents visitation rights is to be so much a part of your grandchildren’s lives that you are virtually indispensable.  If you take every opportunity to create those magic moments […]

Grandparents and custody rights

Many people do not recognize that grandparents can actually be awarded legal custody of their grandchildren, but that is actually the case in some events. This scenario tends to happen when neither parent can provide a healthy and sufficient home to raise their children. It also can occur when there are legitimate concerns about safety due to known instances of drug use or child abuse. It is important to remember that the grandparent does have the responsibility in these cases […]

A “time-out” primer for grandparents dealing with grandchildren and discipline

Grandparents who find themselves having custody of their grandchildren, or just spending a great deal of time with them during visitation, may wonder about discipline techniques. Children who are used to “time-outs” may stump grandparents raised many years ago in entirely different circumstances. Time-outs can effectively stop behaviors that are especially hard to discipline. It can also serve as disciplinary action for a particularly aggressive or impulsive grandkid! These discipline problems can include everything from a temper tantrum to cursing […]

Grandparents raising their grandchildren need to be protected by the courts

Situations in which grandparents raise their grandchildren are certainly not new, but the cases of this happening have been skyrocketing over the last decade. Studies are long overdue as to the number of grandparents in the country who are raising their grandchildren. State and Federal Government agencies that are responsible for gathering such family data need to address this issue. The number of grandparents raising their grandchildren has rapidly increased. With this increase some grandparents are finding themselves overwhelmed. Whole […]

Grandparents rights and custody

Some grandparents may be surprised to know that they can actually be awarded legal custody of their grandchildren, but that does happen in some cases. Usually you see this situation in the event that neither of a child’s parents can provide them a safe and adequate home. Many grandparents know that after the Troxell Supreme Court decision in 2000 grandparents suffered a set-back in regards to what their grandparents rights were. However, this decision did not eliminate the idea of […]

What are grandparents rights today?

Studies have shown that a grandparent’s mental and physical health is greatly enhanced by having the company of their grandchildren. At one time, this was the usual circumstance in a grandparent’s life. Although they weren’t called that, the concept of grandparents rights was ingrained in our society. It was never a question that a grandparents quality time with their grandchildren was a part of normal family life. Today, things have drastically changed. With the prevalence in our society of such […]

Finding out what grandparents rights are in YOUR state

When dealing with the issues surrounding grandparents rights it is important to understand that different states do things different ways. Laws regarding things like grandparents visitation rights and grandparents custody issues are not uniform, and much depends on where you live. All states currently have some type of grandparent visitation rights laws on the books through which grandparents can ask a court to grant them legal rights to maintain their relationships with their grandchildren. Individual state laws, however, vary greatly […]

Protecting grandparents rights

Grandparents rights are hard enough to win in court without false charges and unfounded accusations being added to the mix. Yet, when grandparents have to fight their own children for grandparent rights or custody of their grandchildren they may actually have to deal with these things. That’s because grandparents may actually find themselves accused of everything from physical abuse to mental abuse to using drugs. This is possible because any real or imagined grievances or misdeeds from your children’s childhood […]
